There is a link between menstruation and vaginal thrush, as during the menstrual cycle we experience hormonal changes that make us more susceptible to vaginal infections.
During menstruation, the vaginal pH changes and becomes unbalanced, causing the vaginal temperature and moisture to create an alkaline environment that encourages the growth of Candida albicans. For this reason, some women tend to develop thrush almost automatically after their period.
For all these reasons, experiencing itching or a stinging sensation in the intimate area during menstruation is normal. Although these are symptoms we associate with infections, this is not always the case. It is very common to experience this sort of discomfort during your period.
If you are one of those people for whom the imbalances caused by your period and menstrual blood trigger a yeast infection, take note of these tips!
If you use sanitary towels, we recommend changing them every 4 hours to prevent the build-up of moisture that encourages the growth of Candida albicans. However, we would recommend using an alternative method, as sanitary towels contain fragrances that irritate the vulvar area, causing chafing and friction which lead to dryness.
If you do use them, apply Hydra Oil Vulvar Moisturiser every morning and evening to regenerate and moisturise the area.
Similarly, if you are prone to vaginal infections, we recommend avoiding the use of tampons for long periods, as the warmth and moisture they create can lead to the growth of bacteria and fungi.
Using a specific intimate hygiene product for the intimate area is essential every day of the year, but even more so during your period when there is a risk of vaginal thrush.
We recommend using a chlorhexidine-based intimate hygiene product because, as an antimicrobial agent, it will help to cleanse the intimate area whilst maintaining the natural balance of the skin and mucous membranes. It also has a refreshing and protective effect.
Finally, if you often experience discomfort after your period, we recommend using Prebiotic Vaginal Suppositories. These are recommended in cases where the balance of the vaginal microbiota is disrupted and are ideal for preventing bacterial vaginosis, bacterial and fungal vaginitis, and vaginal thrush during your period.
They are very easy to use: insert one pessary every night for 10 days, after washing the vulvar area with the CLX Intimate Hygiene product mentioned above. After using them, you’ll find that all the period-related discomfort disappears.
