Boosting your defences: the importance of the immune system for vaginal health

Boosting your defences: the importance of the immune system for vaginal health

by Cumlaude Lab

When we seek to strengthen our defences, it is vital to understand the close relationship between our immune system and vaginal health. Did you know that around 70 per cent of immune cells are found in the gut, and that a weakened immune system can have a negative impact not only on the gut microbiota but also on the vaginal microbiota? This connection is essential for maintaining an optimal balance and preventing various conditions that could disrupt this very delicate area of the body, as well as our quality of life.

And what is the role of the immune system?

Our immune system is the guardian of our wellbeing, protecting us against pathogens and diseases, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and/or any other foreign and potentially harmful substances that enter our body. Its role is to identify these invaders and neutralise them, thereby maintaining our health and the body’s balance.

However, its effectiveness can be compromised. Factors such as an unbalanced diet, stress and unhealthy lifestyles can weaken the immune system, upsetting the balance of the vaginal microbiota and increasing the risk of infections, amongst other health problems.

Consequences of an imbalance

An imbalance in the microbiota – both intestinal and vaginal – can have serious effects on health and immunity. Here are some examples:

Imbalance in the gut microbiota:

  • Altered immune response: An imbalance in the gut microbiota can lead to an inappropriate immune response, where the body may overreact to harmless antigens or fail to respond sufficiently to pathogens.
  • Inflammatory response: Gut dysbiosis can induce low-grade chronic inflammation, which is associated with numerous chronic diseases.
  • Impaired intestinal barrier function: A healthy gut microbiota is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier, thereby preventing pathogens and harmful substances from entering the bloodstream.
  • Impaired nutrient absorption: The gut microbiota plays an essential role in the digestion and absorption of nutrients. An imbalance can negatively affect this process, leading to nutritional deficiencies.

Imbalance in the vaginal microbiota:

  • Bacterial vaginosis and vaginitis: An imbalance in the vaginal microbiota can lead to the development of bacterial vaginosis and vaginitis, which are characterised by symptoms such as itching, irritation and abnormal vaginal discharge.
  • Fertility problems: An imbalance in the vaginal microbiota can affect fertility by interfering with the optimal environment required for conception and the development of pregnancy.
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): An imbalance in the vaginal microbiota may increase the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and trichomoniasis, due to reduced natural protection against these pathogens.
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV): An unbalanced vaginal microbiota may increase susceptibility to HPV infection, a virus that has been linked to the development of genital warts and cervical cancer.

4 keys to boosting the immune system

1. Vitamin-rich foods: Incorporating foods such as avocado, spinach, chicken, eggs, nuts, salmon and citrus fruits into our diet can provide the vitamins needed to strengthen the immune system.

2. Staying hydrated: Proper hydration is essential for keeping the vaginal mucosa moist, acting as a natural barrier against viruses and bacteria.

3. Regular physical exercise: Keeping fit can reduce the likelihood of developing infections. It is recommended to do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.

4. Supplements to support intimate health: In addition to diet and exercise, you can incorporate oral or vulvovaginal products that boost the immune system in the intimate area to prevent imbalances.

The importance of probiotics and prebiotics

Probiotics are live microorganisms which, when taken in adequate amounts, confer health benefits on the body. They are commonly found in fermented foods such as yoghurt and kefir, amongst others. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are fibres and non-digestible compounds that feed beneficial bacteria in the gut, promoting their growth and activity.

When it comes to our intimate health, probiotics play a crucial role in supporting a robust immune response, maintaining a healthy balance of the vaginal microbiota, protecting against infections and ensuring proper mucosal barrier function.

Tindalised Probiotics: Innovation in Tynbiotic Intimmune

Tindalised probiotics represent an innovation in the field of probiotic supplementation. Unlike traditional probiotics, tindalised probiotics have undergone a process known as tindalisation—that is, a gentle heat treatment that inactivates the bacteria whilst preserving their structural and metabolic components. This means that, although the bacteria are not alive, their cellular fragments and metabolites can continue to exert their key benefits on gut health and the immune system.

Tynbiotic Intimmune harnesses the power of tindalised probiotics, combining them with prebiotics and other essential nutrients, such as shiitake extract, vitamins and minerals, to provide comprehensive support for the immune system and maintain the balance of the vaginal flora. This innovative approach ensures that the benefits for intimate health are maximised, making Tynbiotic Intimmune a cutting-edge solution for preventing recurrent vaginal infections and reinforcing a healthy balance in the microbiota.

Specific Indications for the Supplement

Furthermore, Tynbiotic Intimmune is indicated as a supportive treatment for the prevention and management of recurrent vaginitis and vaginosis, as an adjunct to local HPV treatments, and whilst taking antibiotics. These indications underscore the importance of a holistic approach to managing vaginal health, where supplementation plays a crucial role in supporting and maintaining intimate wellbeing.

‘The Winning Combination’ for Intimate Health

To achieve and maintain optimal intimate health, we recommend:

  • Oral Supplement with Tynbiotic Intimmune: which strengthens the immune system and improves the health of the gut microbiota.
  • Topical treatment with Prebiotic Vaginal Suppositories: Recommended in cases of an imbalance in the vaginal microbiota. Ideal for the prevention of bacterial and fungal vaginosis and vaginitis, and following the administration of local and/or systemic antibiotics or antifungals.

In summary, looking after our immune system is essential for maintaining good vaginal health. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet, combined with supplements such as Tynbiotic Intimmune, can help strengthen our natural defences and promote a healthy balance in the vaginal flora.

Always remember to consult a healthcare professional before starting any supplement regime or making significant changes to your diet.

How underwear affects your intimate health

How underwear affects your intimate health

The female intimate area is far more complex than we realise. It is where the genital, urethral and digestive systems meet, each with its own distinct microbiota. Furthermore, it is a moist area, with many skin folds and a sensitive mucous membrane. All these characteristics mean that even simple habits such as the choice of underwear can directly affect its balance and wellbeing.
