Have you ever felt a bit unsure about how to look after your intimate area properly? Don’t worry! Lots of women ask themselves the same questions. The truth is that intimate hygiene is an important issue for our health and wellbeing, but it’s sometimes surrounded by myths and confusion. In this article, we’ll guide you step by step so you can create an intimate hygiene routine that makes you feel comfortable, confident and healthy. Let’s get started!
Your intimate area is delicate and deserves special care. Proper intimate hygiene helps prevent infections, irritation and other discomforts that can affect your quality of life. It also helps you feel fresher and more confident.
The key to a good hygiene routine is gentleness. The vaginal area has its own natural cleansing mechanisms, such as vaginal discharge and the internal vaginal flora, so it is not necessary (nor advisable!) to use harsh products that could alter the internal pH balance. Focus on gently washing the external genitals with lukewarm water and a gel specifically designed for intimate use.
Forget about douching. Although it might seem like a good idea, it actually disrupts the natural pH of your vaginal flora and can do more harm than good.
Traditional soaps can dry out the vulvar skin and disrupt the vaginal microbiota. Therefore, for your daily intimate hygiene, choose gentle intimate washes specifically designed for the vaginal area, which respect your skin’s natural pH and do not contain irritating ingredients. For gentle, irritation-free cleansing, choose SYNDET products (free from harsh detergents), which are hypoallergenic and free from irritating fragrances.
Even if you’re worried about odour in your genital area, don’t use intimate deodorants! These products – deodorants and perfumed products, especially if they contain alcohol – can irritate your skin and disrupt its natural balance. A slight odour is normal and doesn’t indicate poor hygiene. However, if you’ve noticed a persistent and intensified change in the odour of your intimate area, see a healthcare professional: it could be a sign of infection.
Wear cotton, breathable and loose-fitting underwear. Avoid fabrics such as silk or other synthetic materials that trap moisture and encourage the growth of germs. And remember to change your underwear every day and wash it with mild detergents!
Whenever possible, clean your intimate area before and after having sex to prevent infections. Urinating after sex also helps prevent other urinary tract infections, such as cystitis.
Looking after your intimate health is an act of self-care. By following these simple tips, you can establish an intimate hygiene routine that makes you feel comfortable, confident and healthy. Remember that every woman is different, so find what works best for you!
