Don’t make vaginal dryness a taboo subject

Don’t make vaginal dryness a taboo subject

by Cumlaude Lab

Vaginal dryness doesn’t only affect women going through the menopause – that’s a myth! It can occur at any stage of your life and for a variety of reasons. It’s vital not to make it a taboo subject, as more women suffer from the symptoms of vaginal dryness than we realise, and the sooner we raise awareness of it, the sooner we’ll find others with similar experiences and, above all, a solution!

With Freeda’s help, we’ve heard from women across three different generations who have experienced vaginal dryness and have spoken out to find a solution as soon as possible.

Throughout our lives, our bodies go through many hormonal changes – it’s perfectly normal! And vaginal dryness can occur during any of these fluctuations. Don’t waste a single minute – consult a healthcare professional, who will give you personalised advice.

We spoke to Freeda about vaginal dryness

We’re partnering with Freeda to raise awareness of vaginal dryness, an issue that is often hidden out of modesty or because it’s seen as abnormal. Freeda is a digital media platform founded with the aim of promoting women’s achievements and empowering them on issues that have been taboo for decades but should be normalised.

Through their social media profiles and in an approachable way, they share experiences that everyone – from the youngest to the oldest – can relate to, using informal language. Reading Freeda’s content is like listening to a friend!

What is vaginal dryness and why does it occur?

You’ll realise you’re suffering from vaginal dryness when you feel discomfort and irritation in your intimate area. Do you experience pain during sex because you don’t have enough vaginal lubrication? That’s another sign.

Although ageing is one of the main factors that can contribute to vaginal dryness, it isn’t the only one. There are many situations that can cause it; these are the most common:

  • Psychological factors: things like stress and depression can have physical effects; there are times in our lives when we feel emotionally overwhelmed. It could be a tragic event, but even overwork and exam periods can lead to vaginal dryness. Take a deep breath, sort out your priorities and consult your gynaecologist to sort it out as soon as possible!
  • Medication. Have you noticed that your dryness coincides with taking a particular medication? Don’t put it off any longer; book an appointment with your gynaecologist to find an alternative that’s gentler on your intimate health.
  • Smoking and alcohol. They’re not good for your health in any way. Try to cut down on them to improve every other aspect of your life!
  • Use of panty liners, tampons or tight-fitting clothing. Does the dryness occur when you use these products during your period? If the discomfort gets worse, try alternatives such as a menstrual cup and wear looser-fitting clothes when you feel uncomfortable.

How can you prevent vaginal dryness?

Follow these simple tips and say goodbye to dryness:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated is essential for preventing and reducing vaginal dryness.
  • Use hygiene products specifically designed for your intimate area – don’t just use any soap or shower gel you use on the rest of your body!
  • Use a vaginal moisturiser regularly and apply lubricant during sexual intercourse to reduce intimate discomfort and feel more comfortable in your day-to-day life.

What products can I use?

Now that you know all about vaginal dryness and why this topic shouldn’t be a taboo, we’d like to recommend some of the products that will best help you reduce it and enjoy your day-to-day life and sex:

  • Internal moisturiser: This gel-based cream is designed to combat symptoms of irritation, dryness and itching of the vaginal mucosa. It is pH-balanced for the vagina and does not affect the integrity of condoms.
  • Mucus: A water-based intimate lubricant gel recommended for use during painful sexual intercourse. It keeps the intimate area soft and moisturised, leaves no residue and does not stain.
